The Green Man incorporates the green energy of the trees and the creative power of the tree spirits returning to life after the death imposed by winter and protector of the forest. The Celtic god Cernunnos who guarded the doorway to the Otherworld and the classical Pan were merged by the Christian church into the horned devil, though there are frequent reminders of him in his earlier form to be found carved in various churches. |
